Oslo House Makeover (Part 1)

Welcome back Tinsel readers! Today we’re starting a two-part profile on one of my favorite recent property makeovers- a complete interior/exterior redo on an extremely tight budget.

This property was purchased as a second home by a Texas client and is located in the Tahoe Donner community within Truckee. The home was built in 1984, and is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath modified A-frame, with approximately 1300 square feet and sloped interior walls. Allow me to introduce you to...Oslo House!

Starting with the exterior of the house, the client realized it needs a repaint. Originally a reddish brown, we brought it into modernity with a two-tone cream and gray color scheme that gives it new life and curb appeal. With some new foliage out front and a few strands of Christmas lights, it has all the potential to be the perfect cozy winter Tahoe getaway!

Moving inside, we wanted to keep the majority of existing stained wood, but this required lots of strategic planning in order to maintain balance with the other changes in store. After some careful consideration, we decided to focus on keeping the doors, ceiling beams, window trim and stair railings. The warm honey tones of the stain provide an excellent contrast to the new paint and decor. Everything else was brightened up with a fresh coat of white paint, and the ceiling beam hardware was re-painted with matte black to add contrast and a timeless look.

We then worked our way through the interior, replacing several major items like flooring, electrical outlets, and the interior paint. Keeping the budget in mind, we were able to keep all of the existing cabinetry in the kitchen. But they desperately needed a refresh, so we had them sanded down, then hit with a fresh coat of paint and all new hardware. We also opted to removed the upper cabinets and replaced with open shelving that incorporated industrial pipe and stained wood to match the other areas of the house. We also added open shelving above the sink for bonus storage space. Elsewhere in the kitchen, we kept the vintage backsplash and spent more on the areas that would make the biggest impact: new white quartz countertops, matte white Cafe appliances, a black TruGranite sink and a new brass faucet.
